if you are new to linux you are best to use a LTS version of ubuntu which is stable.
The newer the version the more bugs that need to be sorted out and very tricky for a newb
so stick with the newest Lts versions

I use ubuntu LTS 8.04 found here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/hardy/release/

all the help and info for it can be found here https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/index.html
