Chaps,

I'm pretty new to the whole Ubuntu/Linux thing, but am enjoying it thus far. I've had an idea which is a bit more adventurous, but am aware that it is quite possibly way beyond the limits of my abilities ...

I have a pocket PDA thing. It's a Fujitsu Siemens N100 Loox. Like this:

http://www.ukgamer.com/articles/344/1/Fujitsu_Siemens_Pocket_Loox_N100_PN.html

Specs are as follows:

Processor SamsungŪ 300Mhz
Memory RAM 64 MB
GPS Full integrated SiRFstarIII chip
Display 2.8-inch QVGA 240 x 320 colour

It's about the size of a pack of cards, and has an SD card slot and nothing else. Everything is done via the touch-screen, and an on-off button and switch on the side. Oh, and a reset button on the back.

I've jailbroken it, and can access Windows CE and run the Navigon software it came with (it's used primarily as a Sat Nav device.) BUT there are a couple of irritations with it:

1. There is no PIM software on it and I have yet to find any for WinCE, so I can't run a diary on it. (Bear in mind it doesn't have pocket outlook on it.)

2. The Sat Nav maps are out of date and Navigon charge a LOAD of money for up to date ones.

So, my question ... is it possible to run a slimmed-down version of Linux (Ubuntu or Kubuntu or something else) on this computer? And, if so, would it be possible to run a Sat Nav application on it, effectively giving me a Linux-based portable Sat Nav machine? (In much the same way as I currently have a Windows-based portable Sat Nav machine.)

I am not a coder, and am pretty new to this Linux game, so any solution would ideally be either easy or down a well-trodden path. However, if there was a possiblity out there for such a thing then I'd be very interested to hear ...

Thanks in advance for any help, or comments, observations or anything else. *

It's unlikely that you will be able to get a Linux-based sat-nav app for your aforementioned PDA.

But if you want at the very least a Linux-powered PDA, then I would give Familiar Linux a try: http://familiar.handhelds.org/

Toxic Mite,

Thanks. Why would a Linux-based sat nav app prove elusive? Do they just not exist, or would they be hard to run on such a small device? (Also, out of interest, what is 'Open Tom' - here: http://www.opentom.org/Main_Page . Is this not open-source sat nav, equivalent to Tom Tom? Or have I misunderstood it?)

Familiar Linux is interesting - thanks for the link. Small snag is that they don't even list my device on their "Supported Handhelds" page, let alone say whether it works on it, but it's interesting reading none the less ...

(Page about supported handhelds is here:

http://handhelds.org/moin/moin.cgi/SupportedHandheldSummary )

Thanks for your help.
