i installed compiz, and its sweet - but really just for showing off, so if i choose none for desktop effects, is compiz turned off ?
i just want to be able to turn it off, so that my computer will run as fast as it can .... i notice some sluggishness with compiz turned on, and just want a quick way to switch between speed, and eye candy really.

Yes, you can easily turn it back on by choosing one of the other options.

cool, i was just wondering beacasue i had read that evryone use metacity --replace
i think it may actually just be the command line version of what i did ?
but i thought that i ran into problems doing metacity--replace before, like my panels disapeared - though that may have been beacause i was using compiz for my theme ?
eh, idk ..
thanks though !!

If you really want to turn it off you can, from a terminal,
metacity --replace This will use the no-frills WM metacity. It's what I've done to eek out the most speed.

That's another way to turn Compiz off but it's only temporary. If you ran that then logged out and back in Compiz would start again.

My system monitor only shows metacity running; this in between shut downs, logouts, etc. Perhaps a saved session thing???
