Hi All,

I'm looking for a clone of the start menu of windows XP (classic view)

The feature I'm looking for:
-less used items hidden until the user hovers the mouse over them

Is something like this around for gnome?

Best regards,
Cedric

Linux Mint 8, very similar but not a clone, just improved.

I don't think suggesting entire distros was what he was looking for (which those two by the way don't do the thing he mentioend). He's just after similar functionality.

As far as I know there is no GNOME addon/plugin that hides programs you don't use, but feel free to correct me, i'm likely 66% wrong.

Right click on the gnome symbol in the menu panel (left corner) and select "remove from panel"

Next right click on the panel itself and select "Add to panel"

From the list of available applets select "Main Menu" the main GNOME menu.

If needed move the new menu applet to the left side of the panel (drag and drop)

Now when you click on the GNOME symbol a main menu similar to XP's (but not the exact same) will drop down or pop up depending on whether your panel is positioned at the top or bottom of the screen. (I moved mine to the bottom)

If you are using Ubuntu, you can download GnoMenu. It has as Windows styled start button and menu options that look just like XP and Vista. All you have to do is remove the original Ubuntu menu and replace it with the GnoMenu Start button on the taskbar.

Me too

The feature I'm looking for:
-less used items hidden until the user hovers the mouse over them

I miss:

"Start > a"

... and then direct access to the Favorites (i.e. bookmarks tree) with the arrow keys. Having to open the browser first and *then* the bookmarks tree is a pain in the proverbial.

Hopefully someone is about to point out to me the error of my ways and that this *can* be done in Linux.

if you want XP-like better use XP.

It's one of the few areas where the Dark Side does better.
