We all know about Facebook, but what about us FOSS/Linux users?

Come on, join us at Fossbook Social Network for Linux Users (http://dreambook.dreamlinuxforums.org/).

All are welcome.

Have a Great day.

He, he. Although I don't think this will catch on, still, a very interesting idea.

1. the favicon is the same as facebook, this infringes on copyrights, etc. in the USA.

2. It's not fossbook.com, no it won't catch on.

3. Fossbook can also be considered a copyright infringement, just as Icebuntu was for Spri.

Bam.

A nice idea, but poorly executed.

Yes someone fix the favicon and get a separate domain name

I would also recommend taking a look into Elgg (http://elgg.org/) as a CMS, which is built from the ground up for social networking. It's GPL.

Dolphin (http://www.boonex.com/dolphin/) is another promising one, with a site demo here (http://boonex.us/).

I thought it was such a fine idea, I joined myself....Facebook for the Linux user, a Linux social network...I just though it was a great idea.

And if it ever gets to the point where the format upsets someone to the point of litigation, then I say bully for whoever came up with the idea =D>

The domain "fossbook.com" is already owned by someone. Specifically, by some company called "Mutli Wow" in Beirut.

Your use of the facebook icon is violative of facebook's trademark. You need to change it.

Great idea. I think you can brainstorm better names though. A name that takes into consideration what the community is.

1. the world doesn't need another social networking site
2. You can use facebook, myspace, bebo et al with Linux
3. If you want to use a social networking site then why limit yourself to networking only with linux users.

1. It is Elgg, for the person who suggested it, free Open Source and not Partnered with Microsoft. Incidentally, the site will always be ad-free.
2. I agree about the domain, but Fossbook.Com got taken - Any suggestions?
3. The favicon will be changed
4. From all the users I have emailed, all images load, so I think somebody has a slow internet connection, an ISP with slow DNS etc.
5. I think that the "We don't need another Social Site" is like saying "We don't need another Ubuntu Respin" Checkout Distrowatch, it seems that some people think we do. But you are very free to not use anything other than Facebook. I use Facebook for worldwide family/friend contact and Mafia Wars. Fossbook (or new suggested name)is only about Linux users joining up to talk Linux on a free Open Source site.
I feel that if it had been UbuntuBook that it would have a million members by now, but we are looking for quality, not quantity.

The site does need a new name+url, favicon. That's about it. Then after that, Linux users who like to get inolved in new Linux projects to promote their own ideas and distros.

I suppose we just need to see what the other Distro users say and compare the feedback.

Thanks you all for your input.

Favicon was removed and replaced with the icon for the theme name.
(Will later be changed for new logo to go with new name and domain)

Fossbook users and other Linux forum users have been asked for suggestions on a name and domain.

You guys can join in to if you like, although I must admit, the feedback here has been a little more harsh than other forums, but at least you are all honest. :)

Thanks again.

By the way, still missing an Ubuntu group if anybody wants to start one. Although I use Ubu KK and Dreamlinux, I thought it would be better if an Ubuntu using Ubuntu Forum member got the chance to be the first.

Can anti-foss people join? I believe in the programmers right to sell closed software. For some software products the closed source model works better. If a program is well designed and easy to use then you might not be able to sell 'support' and at the end of the day a programmer needs to put food on the table.

Well, if I would hazard a guess: No.

Because the owner is a bit arrogant from his/her replies. No offense to the op though (hence why I said "a bit.")

don't sweat it "most of us like the idea"

Some people in here beleave thier opinion is the only one that matters. Fortunatly, there are guys like me who wish the site the best and reposted on other forums like
http://linuxoutlaws.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2513

So keep up the freedom good times. I hope it catches on with people that care about that kind of thing and I frankly don't care to get as big a facebook. I like our communities.

And its ok if your site is a work in progress, so are most my linux boxes. Just keep on making little strides, awesome isn't a destination, its more like a journey.

Copy? Gee, lets see, MS has it's own net, AOL has it's own net are they "copies" of the internet?

oowriter - Abi Word - Kwriter are they copying each other or offering choices?

It's NOT copying - it's about offering choices.

I get the feeling that you would advocate the following Distros merge into the "Debian Forums" since they are ALL based on Debian?

* Collax
* Damn Small Linux
* Debian JP
* Dreamlinux
* Embedded Debian, http://www.emdebian.org/
* Euronode, http://euronode.org/
* Floppix, http://floppix.ccai.com/
* Gibraltar
* GNUstep LIVE CD, http://io.debian.net/~tar/gnustep/
* grml
* Kanotix, http://www.kanotix.com/
* KNOPPIX, http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/
* Linspire, http://www.linspire.com/
* Linex
* MEPIS, http://www.mepis.org/
* M.N.I.S. OCERA, http://www.mnis.fr/en/products/
* Morphix
* PureOS
* RAYS LX
* Stonegate
* Ubuntu
* Univention Corporate Server
* Xandros

My goodness, look at all those copycats!

Gimme a break already!

Have a nice day - unless of course you would consider that copying someone else that is having a nice day, in which case have a day. :lolflag:

Ok, my last post. Thank you very much indeed! You just restored my faith in the Ubuntu Forum Community. I am an Ubuntu user even though I do dev work for other distros, however I tend to frequent Debian forums or Ubuntu-Spain Forums.

Fossbook is a work in progress, and I thank you for offering support. It is not a money making site, there will be no ads, no donations, nothing. Just a community of Linux users promoting eachothers distros and projects (something which can be done freely without being reported by Moderator wannabe's)

Sorry to sound harsh, but larger forums force people to push harder to be noticed, instead of focusing on helping/promoting all Linux/FOSS projects, they wait around to jump on posts/threads to either flame or report in a view to become a Moderator.

As I said, last post, thanks for those of you who offered serious feedback, and sorry to those of you who were annoyed at our presence here.

Peace

lol , I am no bot or spammer just a adament linux nut who wanted to design a site for the linux community to grow enjoy , so I made the Linux A... , not advertising , lol.

The linux Ar.. , is for the linux community and for the open source site known as DR.....

But it seemms that even though I spent many a night thinking lets stand together take on the criminals that abuse our operating systems some people dont seem to want to stick together,

fossbook , linuxarmy, ubuntu forums we are all a team and I dont think fossbook thinks its the next facebook nor does linux army think it is the next best thing ,,, I would say we created the sites for us , more presence means better coverage and yes why doesnt fossbook come email me or I email them we should stand together and eradicate the criminals that have robbed us.

Linux is freedom thats why ubuntu is free.. so stand tall and be proud that we are all part of a create change that our kids kids will be...

That's Ubuntu Only.

Linux users need to unite and share, not segregate eachother regarding the distro they use. There's a word for people who do that in real society.

The whole point of Fossbook (Now Fossunet (http://fossunet.com) - Foss User Network) is that it brings everyone together to discuss all Linux related projects, on an Open Source platform.

Personally, I won't join - I keep in touch with my friends on Facebook, and with other Linux users here (in some of the Linux groups on Facebook, and occasionally on the Fedora, Arch and CrunchBang forums) and it keeps me busy enough.

I would also echo the comments about that the look of the site needs to be changed to move it away from Facebook - the colour scheme and the log in button look very similar, and it wouldn't do the site any good to get into any bother over it.

Apart from that rather negetive rant, I wish the owners of the site good luck with it, and really hope it does take off.
