I got a new computer (HP Pavilion) which runs Ubuntu great but I have a problem opening the DVD drive to put a disk in. There are no buttons on the thing! It is all software controlled.

I can pull up a terminal and type "eject" and it opens but I thought there has to be a way to open it when there is no media in it. Under computer it shows up but when I right click on it there is no eject just open which doesn't work without media in it.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You could assign a shortcut to eject action :

System -> Preferences -> Keyboard shortcuts
Sound -> Eject

Thanks. I made a desktop icon that ejects it so a keyboard shortcut is another nice thing to have.

I would think that if you select "open" on an empty DVD/CD it should open. Never thought of it before but with no buttons on the DVD I now have :)

By the way the HP Pavilion (8 GB RAM, QuadCore CPU, 700 GB HD, ATI graphics and 23" screen) just smoke on Ubuntu. I'm very impressed how it works so smoothly with all the hardware. Happy new year everone.
