View Full Version : [ubuntu] Unable to get Nvidia settings to persist after reboot

I recently installed Ubuntu (9.10) on an old Dell Dimension 4800 with a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 video card. Everything appears to be be working properly with one exception. I can't get my Nvidia settings to persist after I reboot.

I have found numerous posts indicating that others have experie3nced these problems as well but none of the solutions I have implemented has worked so far.

Being new to Linux I am not certain if it is pilot error (more than likely) or if there is something else going on that I simply haven't noticed.

I have created an xorg.conf file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf)
I created a .nvidia-settings-rc file (~/,nvidia-settings-rc)
I created a .xinitrc file (~/.xinitrc)
I have symobolic link between the .xinitrc file and .xsession (also tried .xsessionrc)
(~/home/.xsession->.xinitrc)

With the video settings reverting to 720x450 every time I reboot I don't believe the nvida-settings command in my .xinitrc (or .xsession) file are actually being executed or there is an error of some sort. Though I can't find the error in my .xsession-errors file.
I am including copies of these files as well.

Help would be much appreciated-my forehead is getting flat from the pounding on my desk ( ](*,) )!

Have you tried gksudo nvidia-settings and then making your selections and hit the quit button. For resolution change to stick, just click on save to X.

All - thanks for the replies!!

Linuxforall - Yes I have tried using gksudo nvidia-settings and saving the settings and configruation numerous times with no luck.

atropa - I attempted what you suggested - but no luck. I did find that it is being read because I had accidentally left your bracketed comment in when I copied, pasted, tweaked your suggestion into the xorg.conf file and the system didn't like it so it booted into a non-graphical mode. Easy enough to remedy but the end result is the same.

Joan - I suspect you may be on to something. I had looked for these error statements in the forums and found the bug you referenced. Being so new to Linux I wasn't quite sure what to make of the bug report but intend to look at it in more detail. In the .xsession-errors file I originally included the resolution called out 8 lines below it is 720x450 (and nowhere in my settings is 720x450 called out!). So somewhere between the error and this description of resolution the error is occurring. In looking at these 8 lines I noticed the Xorg.0.log file being referenced so I have pasted it below. The second to line is of interest because it calls out the 720x450 resolution. Not the 1600x1024 I included using the xorg.conf suggested by atropa.

Does anyone know what is being executed and is spitting out the lines between the error statement ((gnome-settings-daemon:1601): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed) and the statement (Checking screen 1Comparing resolution (720x450) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed)?? Is it the gnome-settings-daemon??

Try:

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then restart nvidia-settings with:

gksudo nvidia-settings
then make all the changes you need, apply, then save configuration, and it will see you don't have a xorg.conf file. A new window will open. Hit the button lableled show output, and copy the file. Leave nvidia-settings open, and open a new terminal. Do:

sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf && sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
then paste what you copied from nvidia-settings. Save and reboot.

HappyFeet- Thanks I had seen your previous posts suggesting this and it had no effect - obviously my xorg.conf didn't reflect this because I changed back to an earlier version not being quite sure of what I should be using at the time. I just repeated the process again & I do intend to leave it in this form.

I have read that I need to invoke nvidia-settings in my .xinitrc (symobolically linked to .xsession) but for some reason the high-res settings aren't being applied.

One other item I just noticed. After rebooting I went to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers and it stated that the nvida driver was active. When I go to System->Preferences->Display an information box appears asking "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?" Not sure if this is important or not.

That has also always worked here ( the first command only needed to be done once.
That makes any settings that are saved to xorg remain persistent.

Settings that are only saved to .nvidia-settings-rc aren't persistent. (color corrections, gamma, ect.

While i'm sure there is a more 'proper' way to do so, ( suggestions are welcome) I simply made a small script and added to my start up.

nvidia-settings -l &

Thanks for the help but I've attempted this before as well. After HappyFeet's suggestions I have built up a pretty good xorg.conf file that is in fact staying persistent. The problem is that for some reason the settings are getting clobbered or adjusted on startup. I think the error mentioned by Joan in the .xsession-errors file is where the settings are being changed. Not sure how to prove that but I can't come up with anything else to do.
