I have recently installed 64 bit Karmic on my HP Tx2z laptop. On install I had no issues with sound. After the first update, I have no more sound. I tried this command to test for sound functionality:

speaker-test -t wav -c 2 -D plughw:0,0

I was able to hear sound as well as see this output:

Playback device is plughw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 32 to 8192
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right
Time per period = 2.733867
0 - Front Left
1 - Front Right

But I still get no sound from gnome startup or from chrome, vlc, or movie player. I don't even get system beeps. I checked alsamixer and everything is at max or near max level.
i checked System >> Preferences >> Sound

There is no hardware listed in the hardware tab nor is there anything listed in input or output tabs (save for Dummy output)

here is lspci (easier to read)

If anyone has any advise on how to fix this it would be great.

After some time searching, I came across a solution to this problem
here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1304273). The solution posted by nicolaasuni for the audio crash at boot and sleep worked. But, I used the alsa-base.conf addition described here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1252492).
