i listen too a lot of podcasts and my current mp3 player doesn't cut it because it loses my place when i power it down. i only have about 2 gb of music to put on it so the 8gb touch should be plenty. i am also a gamer and it has a few games i would like to play. so how well does it work with ubuntu? i use rhytmbox too subscribe to my podcasts and would like to keep it that way. will i end up with a $200 brick on my hands?

Same. honestly, if it weren't for apple/iTunes I would bag one in an instance.

I've found the iPod Touch to be the most useful device I own, and I have an Android phone!
The media player is par none, the hardware is very well designed, sturdy and stylish. What puts it over the top, though, are the apps. I have 9 or 10 games that I play regularly (all free or under $5), one of the best GTD clients I've ever used, an ebook reader that syncs with my Kindle account, an encrypted vault of my passwords and personal info, etc....
I would love it if my Android phone could supplant it, but even when there are equivalent apps for both devices, the iPod's is always more polished and more pleasant to use.

an iPhone without the phone part, that's a plus actually. it's a good thing, go for it.

I like mine quite a bit, and while I have to use VirtualBox to put music on it, it's worth it to me. Also, Jailbreak it, you can do more stuff that way :)

I don't know how much you should care about this, but it's worth noting that the 32GB and 64GB models have 2x the processing power, increasing the speed of the device a considerable amount. It's totally up to you as to whether or not that warrants an extra $100.

Well i had a 1G, then a 2G and i loved both of them.
It's worth getting them, and of course you can have a whole load of third-party apps through the jailbreaking process.
Good stuff, if you can put up with iTunes of course.

Great site with information about iPod Touches and the best Jailbreaking Resource on the web;
