It seems to be pretty close to it. People, normal people, are actually using linux in many forms on actual products. From tivos to electronic books it kinda seems like linux, gnu, or some form of foss is everywhere in the consumer space. Just off the top of my head I can think of quite a few popular linux/foss products and investments by major names in consumer linux.

Android phones with top spots on every carrier
Palm Pre/Pixi
Kindle
Tivo
Ubuntu
Netbooks of various stripes
Dell selling Ubuntu pre-installed,
Nokia and the maemo platform,
ATI helping with the creation of open drivers
Intel's Moblin

Lets not forget all of the improvements linux that focus on making it better for normal people. Gnome and especially KDE have grown tremendously. You have everything you need and the software is actually nice to use. In other words free is not the biggest selling point, looks and functionality are. Speaking of looks, Compiz, Kwin, e17?! This is also the decade of bling.

Oh and pulseaudi... nevermind
