I have used the netbook remix on my friends computer. It seemed to be a decent version, especially with the small screen real estate you have to work with. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but it is still the same core of ubuntu, just with a different skin.

For a netbook I would recommend Moblin or Ubuntu Moblin Remix (UMR) I prefer the interface and it is more netbook based.

I use unr 9.10 and it's very nice, everything seems to work straight out of the box and i've even managed to get my Vodafone 3g dongle to work :)

I have tried UNR and i find it really buggy and slower than regular Ubuntu. I use regular Ubuntu but the problem is windows are not resized according to your screen size. The other thing i have now started using Windows 7 which i found better than both UNR and regular windows. No more heating or fan on my Lenovo s10e.

I run full-on ubuntu on my laptop. I'd only switch to the netbook remix if you need it, due to the small screen (and other limitations) of a netbook.

Actually, GNOME is already installed. You just need to switch to a "classic desktop".
