After a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10, I removed the default menu, added a gnome menu so it's just one icon and removed the "Indicator applet session".
The problem is shutdown, logout and lock screen do not appear in the gnome menu anywhere, the only way I can get those to show up is to add an "Indicator applet session" to the panel and remove it again.
However when I right click on the gnome menu and choose "Edit menus", or when I log out/shut down/reboot the menu entries are gone and I have to add and remove the "Indicator applet session" again.
