Install on and external harddrive

I am fairly new to Ubuntu and this forum but i decided i would give it a try.

So my previous laptop just crashed but i now have the hard-drive with windows installed on it and i have it hooked up to my laptop via USB. I am trying to install Ubuntu onto that hard-drive in order to use it as a secondary operating system.

I have the disc in my computer and when i boot from the disc everything seems to work fine. I choose my language, i click install Ubuntu, then the screen goes black with a blinking underscore across that top. I have waited for it thinking maybe it was loading but nothing happened.

Any suggestions?

What ubuntu version you use?
try option use ubuntu without any change instead of install it.
if you can see ubuntu desktop, try install again from there.
if you not success use ubuntu live CD, try download ubuntu alternate version.
