Hi folks,

I'm trying to install 8.04 LTS on an Acer Revo using USB without a CD-ROM drive.

Every time I try to install it fails as it can't locate a CD-ROM drive.

Is there anyway to install it without a CD-ROM?

Cheers!
Paul.

Hi & welcome to the forums.

A great resource for usb & ubuntu is here --> http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

To save heart-ache & much head scratching, do this first --> http://www.pendrivelinux.com/testing-your-system-for-usb-boot-compatibility/

You know it makes sense !!!

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/search/8.04 will give you a list of projects & fixes for 8.04, they're upto 8.04.3 - which is the last release before 8.04.4 comes out in preperation for 10.04, the next LTS (It's due about January 28th - Ubuntu 8.04.4)

Regards,

Phill.

if you want to install through WUBI, you can use this software to mount the ubuntu .iso and run the installation in Windows if you use windows: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/home

Cheers Phil but those don't cover my particular problem. I've created the bootable USB stick using unetbootin for Windows.

The machine boots and I can run the installer. The problem is the installer looks for a cdrom drive to mount even when installing from USB. I don't have a CD or DVD drive so it stops.

MelDJ, will the WUBI install negate the need for a CD/DVD drive?

Like I say, there's no problems creating a bootable stick or booting from it. It's the actual 8.04 installer that looks for a CD drive :(

yes. because ubuntu is installed in windows.

yes. because ubuntu is installed in windows.

Ahh this is not the problem. I have no trouble creating a USB stick in Windows.

When I install 8.04 from the USB stick it still tries to find a CD drive when it installs so I still can't install it.

did you configure your BIOS to boot from usb?

Yes. As I say it boots fine.

When it gets into installing Ubuntu Server, I can pick my country/language/keyboard. It then attempts to detect and mount the CD-ROM drive and obviously fails.

I've booted from USB so why is it trying to find the CD?

Hello,
I am trying to install Karmic server x86 on an IBM ThinkCentre M52 and I have run into the exact same problem as probedb. I have successfully installed Karmic Desktop using the same method on the IBM so I know it is not an issue with the computer or the thumb drive. Please Help !!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance,
Fire$torm

In the end I put 9.04 desktop on my server and removed gdm.

I'm guessing everyone that installs by USB either has a CD/DVD drive plugged in or doesn't put a server variant on as 9.04 server does it as well.

I find it unbelievable that in all these years no-one has noticed this tho

Sorry I can't be more help Fire$torm. I was going to borrow a USB CD drive just to do the install at one point.

Hello there,

I have exactly the same problem, only my server has a cd drive installed... I do not believe it is a hardware problem, its something to do with the 8.04 install program.

Any help anyone?
Cheers

This guy http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1369628 says he's done it so I have asked him how he did it.

I imagine it's something to with the server installer it's not a live cd like the deskop iso/installer.

Maybe it requires the bios or something to run stuff like cd etc as it is not a fully set up live image?

I wonder if it would be possible to put the whole ISO on the usb
then tell it to mount automatically somehow.

I put the ISO on the usb and when the sever install started pressed alt F2 to get into a virtual terminal but it wasn't there as the usb was not mounted (catch 22) but what if the ISO could be mounted on boot somehow to somewhere?

Any way I would like to see the response of that guy!

I have tried the "Virtual Drive" routine using BootMyIso (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/boot-iso-from-usb-flash-drive/) (Which works well in its own right) to boot Karmic Server. It did not work. Lame. I have read that it works with RedHat/Cent_OS, Debian and others. I just cannot figure out WHY Canonical did not implement this feature into the server distro. Anyhow, if you can use a bootable utility on a stick give BootMyIso a try. You can configure it to launch other iso images from the boot menu.

Peace.

System->Administration->USB Startup Disk Creator, from I'm guessing the desktop install or live CD works apparently.

I have only used the usb-creator.exe from windows and that didn't work.

Also I have been told http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ is the best suggest, you try it.

Have your tried from the i386 desktop install or live cd? People are saying it works.

Oh yeah, I used my USB stick to install Karmic Desktop x64. That worked like a charm. Now I can Dual Boot my main system.

I finally gave up for now on Karmic Server. I went old school and installed Win2K Pro on my server. Man, I forgot how much better Win2K is over XP. I'm running Boinc client (w/Primegrid, Milkyway and Seti Apps), Azureus, UltraVNC and I can still access my file shares. I haven't had to reboot my server once since I got the Win2K install stable (I had to rollback a Bios update). XP would bog down about every 6 - 10 hours running the same clients.
Anyhow, I will eventually install Ubuntu x64 server edition. I just need to advance my knowlege of Ubuntu in particular and Gnu/Linux in general.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.
Peace.

For every one to try.

and also (but I think the above explains it more)

Remeber to change the links given to have your ubuntu release name and arc
depending on what ISO you have and what hardware you have.

I know this is old, but I had the same problem recently and found a solution.

I was performing a Debian 6.0.3 netinst using PenDriveLinux Universal USB installer 1.8.6.9.

When I called dmesg from a virtual console (CTRL-ALT-F2), it listed a whole slew of USB device errors and resets. Since the installer was already loaded into RAM, I pulled the USB drive out of the port and reinserted it. Another call to dmesg confirmed a proper detection, in my case /dev/sdb.

I then returned to the installer (ALT-F5) and reran the auto CDROM detect. Setup continued without error.

Hope this helps someone....
