View Full Version : [all variants] with 2GB+ of Ram, why run an OS from a HDD?

I remember using Slax from a USB stick that asked me if I wanted to load the entire OS into the RAM. It took a while to decompress it all, but once loaded, it was FAST. Ubuntu has a lot of wonderful things that slax does not, but I wonder if the entire OS could be loaded into RAM. Is there any way to load the 700GB of stuff in the liveCD (or live USBstick) within 2GB of RAM?

oh, and judging by the comment (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/25496)at the end of the wikiarticle, it looks like there is even a cheatcode to load the entire thing into RAM. I wonder if this bug isn't ironed out.... Has anyone had any luck with it?

heh heh heh!

well, it looks like there are bugs, but I'm of the suspicion that it'd be an amazing improvement to the liveCD. Judging by the number of distros that already have this feature, and the fact that there already are workarounds, its probably not too hard to bugshoot and implement on a wider scale, so i'm going ahead and submitting it to brainstorm (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/23143/):

once it's approved, please vote for it if you like the idea!
