Still, they are still going to be as notorious as they are, because it will soon be unviable, and they will have to go back to pirating Windows XP.

meh. maybe after six months of use, some users will slowly realize what they are actually using, get fed up with the additional layer of abstraction provided by the XP-like interface, do some homework, and discover ubuntu.

Even the government sponsored "Red Flag Linux" distribution might look a bit familiar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Flag_Linux

Baidu used to be a pixel-perfect copy of Google as well, tho it seems to have recently changed.

There is a script you can download (I forget where) which will convert Ubuntu to look very similar to Windows XP, and it reversible.

Nah, it's not that bad. It's been done thousands of times before, and to be honest, what's it hurt? If someone uses Ubuntu but prefers the look and feel of XP, they'll probably change the entire setup anyway.

And I'm guilty too. ...

Hmm, that WLMF OS at http://www.ylmf.org/themes.html offers downloads to the themes that I use from zgegblog found here https://launchpad.net/~bisigi/+archive/ppa (https://launchpad.net/%7Ebisigi/+archive/ppa) .

I used google translate to translate http://www.xiazaiba.com/html/990.html (the link to the infinity theme)

It went from GPL to freeware?, and the credits file is missing from the archive. I'm not a license guru, but I thought I'd mention it.

Correction, the license and credits files are found only in the tar.gz theme files at https://launchpad.net/~bisigi/+archive/ppa (https://launchpad.net/%7Ebisigi/+archive/ppa), not in the deb files... but still.

It's not the first time people have tried to live off looking like something it is not. Though looking at the screenshots (provided they are of the real running OS) they really did a impressive job making Ubuntu look like a 9 year old OS deserving of eternal rest.

I am though surprised that nobody has attempted to do something similar to the Macs, you could probably with ease do a cheap but decent looking design and we already know that we can make GNOME look pretty much like OS X - with added effort the illusion and well picked defaults I am betting you could both do a very decent product and fool people at least long enough to make them buy it. We could call it the iMax.. now with optional iPot portable media player.

So why are they pirates? Everybody and their grandmother comes up with a new version of Ubuntu that looks like something different. There's nothing piratical (is that a word?) about that.

Or are they real pirates? like with swords and beards and funny hats and parrots on their shoulders?

Pirates haven't looked like that sense colonial days. They've traded the large sail ships, parrots (maybe), and such for speed boats and ak-47's ...well they might have a large ship such as a cargo ship for a mothership (no UFO jokes please.)

What I think is funny about Ylmf OS is that it's advertised to look exactly like XP. All the articles about it feature a screenshot from the OS's webpage that indeed looks exactly like XP; however, it is not a screenshot of Ylmf OS. It's a screenshot of XP. The actual screenshots look nothing like XP:

Well, it can be used to trick people but it doesn't have to be used in that way.
Distributing Ubuntu that looks like windows is far better than pirating windows and I'm not talking about benefits to Microsoft.

A distro with an XP-based interface might be of more use than you think. Some computer users are seriously thrown when faced with something that looks entirely alien. But if they see a graphical interface that looks and (apparently) works just like they're used to, they're much more likely to give it a fair go. Yimf might help to encourage new users to try Linux. So it's not a case of "fooling people". It's a way of helping them.

Many forum members would say that the XP interface is horrible. But awful or not, it is nevertheless what a great many computer users are used to. It's what they know. Using what they know to help them learn something new is a tried and tested educational strategy.

The issues are

1) "Ylmf Windows XP" was a real pirated Microsoft product prior to the arrival of "Ylmf OS" which is Ubuntu Linux. The Ylmf team has been frightened away from distributing real Microsoft products by the arrest of the distributor of "Tomato Garden" which was also a real pirated Microsoft Windows XP.

See

http://www.clonedinchina.com/2009/12/xp-com-owner-launched-windows-xp-alike-ubuntu-based-ylmf-os.html

http://www.clonedinchina.com/2009/08/the-maker-of-tomato-garden-windows-xp-gets-35-years-in-jail.html

2) http://www.XP.com/ points to Ylmf OS

Surely Microsoft would have issues with that.

3) Google trends shows that Ylmf OS has become a very popular search target in a short time:

I think that these are coming close to many lawsuits, don't you??? Though, I don't think MS can do much, or else they probably would have...

This will probably reduce the users of pirated versions of MS, and legal versions of MS as well, and promote Linux in China...

though... the way they go about it... i particularly don't care for...

one version of Linux I like is Zorin, which works quite well, is easy for Windows users to migrate with, but trying to replicate Window's GUI to exactly...

based on Ubuntu! yay! :)

http://www.zorin-os.webs.com/

I think it stays true to many of Ubuntu's ideas

I have not tried it myself yet, but I heard they did something unique with WINE, so that it seamlessly integrates with the habits of a XP user, assuming the support exists.....I dont know how well it works, but that is exactly what Ubuntu should be doing without trying to copy the look or feel of windows.

If wine worked automatically without having to set it up, if it just executed when you plop in a disk meant for windows rather than having to take the extra steps to open it in wine....that is what it will take to spread the GNU and Linux platform....and even low level users help by increasing the popularity of the OS.

Linux users need to accept a lower standard of typical user if you really want to go mainstream and make the worlds technology based around open source principles rather than corporate oligarchy.

If Wine seamlessly integrates without special promoting, then they have really brought something new to the table....if its just pre-installed without improving compatibility or interface, then they havnt really done much besides make a new skin.

Maybe I should check it out before judging it.

Well that sucks.

I am not super impressed with this OS. it seems like they are trying to copy the exact look and feel of windows, probably to trick people, rather than merely compensate for the functionality that people expect when coming from windows....two totally separate things.

I doubt everyone has your problem though. People have odd problems with Ubuntu as well.

It does seem that they have done a few innovative things beyond copying the look of windows....not as much as Ubuntu, but a few things.
