Have anybody tried this? It has almost everything preinstalled including mp3, DVD support, gnome + kde + xfce, ccsm, ubuntu tweak. The latest is version 2.5 [the odd version numbers will have 3 DEs preinstalled].

It simply allows you to start off with more packages on a new install, or show off different desktops from one disc.

You spend more time downloading before install and less time downloading afterwards.

I assume the name is poking fun at the "Ultimate" versions of Windows.

K. I'm not the target audience then.

The idea that someone interested in an OS that is fully personally customizable would choose to have it customized just exactly the way someone else thinks it should be customized is a bit ludicrous.

EVERY os is "customzied" in some way that someone else this it should be customized. If you think it shouldn't, maybe you should start out on slackware or arch linux, and truly start w/ a clean slate. Ubuntu comes orange, kubuntu comes blu, linux mint comes in green, etc... etc... I didn't see ubuntu ask on some install screen what theme or what icon set I should start out with.

What I see w/ Ubuntu UE is that just a lot more junk comes pre-installed. That's a good thign for a lot of people that want to spend countless hours using their computer, not customizing their os. And searching gnome-look for just the right theme is pure torture...

TheeMan does more than just install a few apps and the default them is amazing. I don't even bother with new ubuntu versions until he releases the ultimate version (ok that's a lie, I love beta testing).

Ultimate Edition is an operating system based on Ubuntu, which is itself based on Debian. The creators aim was to create a better user experience and improved usability.

Ultimate Edition started off as Ubuntu Christmas Edition, and was made as a Christmas present for the Ubuntu community. The creator, TheeMahn, then created Ubuntu Ultimate 1.1. Ultimate Edition has more software pre-installed and ready for use even in the live CD/DVD environment than Ubuntu. Ubuntu Ultimate 1.2 was released shortly after 1.1 with even more new software. To answer the call of gamers, TheeMahn then built Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition. On October 18, 2007, TheeMahn received an e-mail from Canonical asking that the use of the Ubuntu logo and name stop. The reason was that Ubuntu Ultimate had become too different from Ubuntu and that continued use of the name and logo may damage the Ubuntu Project. Ubuntu Ultimate then became Ultimate Edition. We are now up to 2.5 with 2.6 ( based off Lucid Lynx ) just a month away :cheer:

Ultimate Edition is growing. With more and more users finding the light, the support infrastructure needs to grow – and it has.
There is now a choice of 3 different international forums:

http://forumubuntusoftware.info (Ultimate Edition Central)
http://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/ (Ultimate Edition Australia/Oz)
http://ultimateeditionisrael.freeforums.org/ (Ultimate Edition Israel)

All three are focused on just one goal – to make your Ultimate Edition experience the best it can be. Join one or join all three, the choice is yours.

Ultimate Edition – We've got you covered. :great:

Ultimate Edition is like asking for a romantic kiss with the girl next door and being taken to a month long party at the Playboy Mansion. You ask for a few more applications a few more tweaks to get your Ubuntu running a little more smoothly and you get drowned in so much choice, you probably flounder for breath.

This is not necessary good or bad, but I'm sure some people will find the extreme opposite of Ultimate Edition to what the default Ubuntu offers a little frightening. And others will cherish it like rain in the desert.

The choice of included programs is simply phenomenal. The programs are selected with care and a good balance is maintained between different categories and different uses, allowing just about anyone a hefty sample of everything. If you're lazy and want everything served on a platter, Ultimate Edition is the right formula for you.

The price you will have to pay is the reduced performance, much increased system resource usage and occasional application crashes and incompatibilities, as it seems virtually impossible to orchestra this huge install base without glitches.

Overall, Ultimate Edition in an impressive, welcome project. Future versions will offer an even better, more streamlined integration of applications into the distro and seek to reduce the system resource consumption as much as possible. :guitar:

Ultimate Edition is an operating system based on Ubuntu...

Of course it is a great distro. You forgot to mention that the odd numbered versions have KDE and xfce preinstalled in addition to Gnome.

I don't really see the need for it. Couple quick commands and I have everything I need.

I am running Ultimate Edition on all of my systems not with the exception of my netbook and it sweet. The one big advantage of using Ultimate Edition over the regular Ubuntu is everything is preloaded right out of the box for you. If you are a long time Ubuntu user or just like having everything your way go with regular Ubuntu because it very easy to customize. On the other hand it also makes a great live cd and is perfect for new users that have a hard time get everything started.:guitar:

What are the benefits of using it over Ubuntu?

The main benefits for me has been it's makes an amazing LIVE CD. Plus as a new user it's just hands down the easiest way to jump into Linux with out having to learn all of the little bells and whistles that comes with it.
