Yep, two full moons in the month of December.

The 2nd is on 31st of December & the 1st of January, so we will get two months in a row that each have 2 full moons in them. :)

For all its worth, it's not like there is any great cosmic significance to it or anything, its just a natural occurrence that happens rarely in the Gregorian calendar.

Still, full moons do effect some people more than others; it is considered to be the high energy time in the lunar cycle.

I'm sure that there are a few places that host celebrations that would have preferred for it not to be a full moon on New Years eve...

I knew that... but do you know how often this very rare event occurs? Only once in a... hee hee. But I didn't know that it would occur twice in this month, only on the NY's eve.

No, I had not notice but since I have an almanac calendar next to my desk I was able to confirm that.

Cool. I like astronomical events.

Should we start a rumor that the world will end ???

I believe this is more of an astrological event than an astronomical.:lolflag:

Oh no! I'm in trouble! Two full moons in a month! Many of my circle of acquaintances have had mental health issues to cope with that in times past would have had them classed as lunatics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunatic)! :)

(No offense intended. They're a good bunch, decent people, no crazier than the average idiot person on the street.)

Why?

Because there is usually more hyper energy involved when it is a full moon. Many people can't sleep on a full moon (seriously) Many women menstruate on or around the full moon.

Not everyone is effected by the moon, but many are.

My daughters boyfriend own & manages a hotel, & he has noted the effect of the full moon, & is glad that his pub is closing early this new years eve (doing its thing during the day early evening) then passing on the crowd to the other pub in town that will go late. He was with us on xmas day & I told him about the moon, & he was doubly relieved that he was closing early on that day that is notorious for over celebration particularly in the young.

Young drunks with no respect are the pits.

It just occurred to me that because the date of the blue is the 31st of December, it will also be a full moon on the 1st of January, which means that there will also be 2 full moons in January 2010.

Holly Dooley, 2 blue moons in a row! :lolflag:

[Edit:] I edited the OP with this new info'.

The way you worded the OP it sounded like you meant that there are going to be two moons at the same time. Tell the people by the coastline to run for their lives.

Actually it depends on where you live =)

For Europe and the Americas, yes, but for New Zealand, the blue moon occurs in January.

A Full Moon on Hogmannay is natures way of giving us Drunken fools a light to find our dropped house key's when they stagger home at 5am New Years Day....

My wife told me that it is another 28 years before we have a blue moon on the 31st of December again.

Actually it could be considered either, or both.

While the Moon, Earth, etc are all physical objects interacting with one another, our perception of two full moons in the same month is based upon our man made calendar.

Interesting thought you provoked.
