How to add Win 7 to grub

Hi

I recently download and compile the latest kernel (To learn how to), and unfortunately i lost the Windows 7 option from my grub. I can't enter win 7 now.

But still i have the error: "Bootmanager is missing. Please ctrl+alt+del to restart"

Not: I am not using Grub 2. it is something 1.x

Try booting from your Windlose 7 CD and then choose Repair and the first option will be Repair Startup or Boot Process. This will restore your Win7 boot loader and you will be able to boot it up.

Now on Win7 desktop try installing GRUB.
Hmmm..I'm not 100% sure about this though... But give it a try and let's see

0oops...sorry, again I'm not quite sure about this but you can go to Microsoft website and search if there are tools to recover the Win7 bootloader

In your linux install (not a live cd), give the output of

grub-install -v

If it's 1.97... then you do in fact have Grub2. If it's not, ignore the rest of this post!

When you boot the computer do you get a Grub menu, but without a Win7 entry? Or do you not get a boot menu at all?

If you don't get a menu:

sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

Then, or if you already get a boot menu:

sudo update-grub
- This should scan your other partitions and detect the installation on sda1/sda3.

(What is on /dev/sda1 by the way? It's not marked as bootable.)

Post the output of all of these commands.

If SecretCode's advice does not work then...Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot into Ubuntu. Come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script to the desktop. Once on desktop open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and run this command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

You are missing boot files for windows 7, all are not present there. (See red above in your script results). Since they are missing GRUB will not recognize the installation, which is moot because without them windows 7 will not boot. You are going to have to download that windows 7 recovery iso from the link provided to neosmart. Burn the iso as an image to CD and boot from it. Follow the instructions here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708) for restoring windows 7 bootloader. Reboot and make sure windows boots. Then you will have to restore GRUB.

You are missing boot files for windows 7.

Follow the instructions here for restoring windows 7 bootloader.
Those instructions are for fixing the MBR and the boot sector. But your MBR and bootsector are just fine. So this will not help you. To restore your boot files, see Step 2 in this tutorial:

Just thinking out loud here. I'm curious what Presence1960 will think, so please be patient, but maybe you can provide a little info about your installation.

Here I see a boot flag on sda3:

And of course with the boot flag set on sda3 grub is trying to boot it:

So I'm just wondering (just thinking out loud) what would happen if the boot flag was removed from sda3 and a new boot flag placed on sda1 and then try to run "sudo update-grub" again :confused:

I am as fallible as the next person. I linked an incorrect procedure while someone else had the correct one linked earlier. I think sda1 was the win 7 install but is now missing BCD. I say that because it has some but not all boot files. If that is true the boot flag should be on sda1.
Neither sda1 nor sda3 is a "System Reserved" partition because they are both way too big for that. I would follow meierfra's advice as I am familiar with his expertise in windows as well as linux.

P.S. Thanks for the link meierfra, I bookmarked that one. When I get some free time this week I am going to install Vista OEM, then remove some boot files and try that how to so I can learn and become a little familiar with that procedure.

Would not make a difference. Grub ignores the boot flags, it only looks for the boot files.

winload.exe is always on the same partition as the operating system. So /dev/sda1 is definitely the location of the OS. But the other boot files (bootmgr and BCD/) can be on a different partition. And since the other boot files are missing, I would expect that they were on a now deleted partition. But that's just a guess.



I am still waiting for any solutions in Linux part.

Downloading a Vista/Win 7 recovery DVD and following the instruction linked by erfahren or (the essentially equivalent once) linked by me, is really your best option. You could get away with just downloading the boot files and copying them to your Windows partition, but I don't recommend that.

Thanks everyone;

I just burn the recovery cd it automatically fix errors and ask me for restart. I did that but the problem was still there, so in second time, i select the operating system and do the option (i think it was) Fix for errors .

After the step above, i lost Ubuntu grub and i was automatically in to my Win 7.

At this part, i follow instructions written here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708 via my Bootable USB (Ubuntu Os inside).

I execute this command on conosle: sudo update-grub2 and win 7 was successfully added.
