I'd like to create an applet

I'd like to create an applet In python, using gtk/gnome.

I'm new enough that I am not sure how to start. Could someone provide me(and everyone else) with a skeleton structure to place an icon in the notification area, and create/destroy a drop down menu?

I know how to create windows, but I would like to see how to interface with the notification area.
