MOTHERBOARD:
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

CPU:
i7-920

HARD DRIVE:
Seagate Barracuda XT ST32000641AS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5

VIDEO CARD:
SAPPHIRE 100282SR Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express

I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a new computer I have just built. When I boot the live CD and try to install I get to step 4/7 and I am not able to create a partition. Pressing forward on this step leads to the error: No root file system is defined.

GParted does not see my HDD.

Typing: sudo apt-get remove dmraid does NOT solve the problem.

Typing: sudo blkid
Displays: /dev/loop0: TYPE="squashfs"

Typing: sudo fdisk -l displays nothing.

I used a windows XP installation CD and the partition table displayed my HDD.

Here is the output of dmesg: http://pastebin.com/f6e8a7a75

Any help would be very much appreciated! I feel lost...

It sounds like your Live Disk is corrupted. Boot into the disk and when you would normally select to try the system. Select Check Disk. Then that will check the disk for errors if it is broken, re-download the ISO and re-burn the disk

You may want to download GParted LiveCD and boot from that and then manually set up your partitions for install. During install you would then just select those partitions. You'll want a root(/), home(/home), and swap partition.

Has this disk been formatted and is anything else installed, like windows?

I tried the gparted live cd and it also did not see my HDD. I then again went to see if the windows installation CD would see my drive, and it allowed me to create partitions.

What other things could it be or could I try? Anyone?

Try the alternate text based installer here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate).
