Hi, a friend of mine has just phoned me because he's having problems in installing Ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala in his laptop

Dell XPS m1530
Intel(R) core(TM)2 duo CPU T9300 a 2,50GHz
scheda video invidia gforce 8600 m gt

Now everything's blocked. He's telling me that he's been looking for 40 minutes an all-white window that titles "controlling the installation" (I'm translating it from Italian so I'm not very sure about the title), and beyond the window, only an ubuntu-like orange and empty desktop.

What to do now?

Can you ask your friend at what stage the problem occurs. Is it when loading the live cd, or during the installation itself, after hitting the install button?
Tell him to try safe graphics mode (f4 at the live cd menu).

It's during the installation itself, but can't say at which "stage" of the installation....

Could be corrupted files on the cd, tell him to check the disk for errors.

Thanks for advice

meanwhile, we've shut the pc down and restarted it.

XP switched itself on without any problem.
