enable desktop effects

I have ATI Inc Radeon Mobility HD 3400 graphic chipset. I cannot enable desktop effects on Ubuntu Karmic 64bit.
I tried installing fglrx driver from system->hardware drivers, but after activating it and restarting, i get a blank black screen.


Can anyone tell me or at least point me to the article that will help me.

I tried drivers like ati, radeon, radeonhd. but i just get message "desktop effects cannot be enabled"
