I don't want anyone here on Lucid forum to miss out on this opportunity. I downloaded and installed it on Lucid.

It works great. Much faster than OpenOffice(or MS Office)

You can download all variations - Windows, RPM, DEB or the install source gz variety.

You have to hurry. Free download ends on Christmas.

""Christmas is coming early this year...
Between today and December 31, SoftMaker gives away full versions of SoftMaker Office 2008 for Windows – permanently usable and upgradable to future versions.

But there is more: For every download on www.loadandhelp.com, SoftMaker donates € 0.10 (ten Euro Cents) to charity and development projects worldwide on www.betterplace.org."

Its best to go here (http://www.softmaker.com/english/index_en.htm) for English folks.

I gave it a short whirl. So far, so good. It is a lot faster than OO.

Fast? Objectively? Perhaps.

Subjectively?
Definitely not: it may load the application faster but it can not scroll the fonts list to save its digital life... keeps running ‘late’/‘behind’ the cursor...

... And the file chooser dialog (insert an image) seems slow-ish compared to e.g. KDE's standard too.

Also: it looks like Wine to me.

Thanks for trying this. It definitely does not use the Wine executables. I don't have Wine installed on my Lucid version.

But now that you mentioned it, it does have that sorta feel. I haven't run it through it paces, only opened a few files that I use.

It could easily use its own bundled version of Wine, like Picasa.

Ahh, you might be right. I'll have to go to Softmaker forum and ask. It's still very fast, but on Linux it does have that kind-a sort-a Wine feel when you open or save a file.

Softmaker Office is definitely a real Linux program not just a wine port. Softmaker only uses its own toolkit, that's all. It may look like a Windows application, but it is not one

Prove is very easy :

Look at Picasa. There are lots of Wine-libraries and even a Windows-like directory-structure.

There is nothing like that in Softmaker Office-package.

Moved to Community Cafe, as this doesn't pertain specifically to Lucid development or testing.

I don't like it I would rather use OO, but it is an alternative for users looking for better MS compatibility.

Hmm. For some reason, I can't find the link for the free download. Is it just me, the usability of the website, or is the promo over? :)

EDIT:
Okay. Got it. Apparently, it's on the "Load and Help" link. Cool. I just helped. hehe. It's kinda misleading, though. I thought, it's not the place where to download.

I tried it out a couple of months ago.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work with Scim. For me, and I suspect for a number of other people who need non-Latin input, that's a deal-breaker.
