My Dell Inspiron 1545 came with 8.04 or 8.10 (don't remember) but upgraded fine to 9.04. I was able to successfully upgrade 3 other computers to 9.10 but upgrade failed miserably on my HP 2133 so I'm leary about upgrading the Dell. So I tried the 9.10 LiveCD. The boot process starts fine (I accept English) then the screen goes blank and stays blank with no console access. Eventually I hear the start up tune but never any display of any kind. I've tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit LiveCDs with same exact results. So I'm not planning on upgrading the Dell any time soon. For comparison, the Fedora 12 LiveCD boots fine on both the HP and the Dell. (I switched from Fedora when Fedora upgrades/LiveCDs stopped working on most of my computers.)

Take a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/478547

Hope it helps.
