Greetings.

I was thinking of a buying a new laptop, and I think that this is my most promising bet:

Is it overpriced? Is Acer a decent brand? Are there any other laptops with similar specifications that I could buy at the same or lower cost?

Thanks.

I don't think its overpriced for Canada, just kidding the price is about the same as Amazon has it listed for ;)

Amazon has 3 reviews for it you might want to look at.. they don't look bad.

I personally have heard some questionable stories about Acer laptops; two of my friends had their new Acer laptops experience hardware problems within a year of purchase. Thankfully, they were both covered by a warranty. For an affordable and very functional laptop, I prefer Toshiba laptops. I bought myself a new Toshiba Satellite laptop from Future Shop in June for $599, with a Centrino processor and 4GB of RAM. It's the "Future Shop Exclusive" Toshiba laptop, and it comes it slightly varying hardware specs. The hardware specs of the Staples laptop are quite good, but I would just question the quality of the Acer brand.

EDIT: It appears that Future Shop has raised the price of their Toshiba laptops since I bought mine. You might also want to try buying from Dell online - Dell has a fairly solid reputation and offers competitive pricing.

How about the $699 one? How many years warranty should I get for it?

Wasnt I just reading another thread about how bad acer were ? or has senility finally come to roost? All I know is I would never ever buy an HP laptop or printer (shudder!)...and that staples in the UK (I notice your linked site was actually in the UK) always did their best to help and be courteous. Just lets say that as far as big companies go they've proved the better of a bad bunch as far as I'm concerned). My own experiences...and if I wanted a laptop...I'd get hold of a second hand that somebody abandoned cos they dont know where the start button is...nuke it... and put ubuntu on top. :guitar:

Actually Acer sucks. The only good Acer is the AspireOne. Most cheap Acer laptops are poorly built and fall apart.

I recommend Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba or Asus.
