Have you tried installing it via 'Ubuntu Software Center' while you have the live-cd loaded?

yes but the software center won't allow me to install anything.

"Not available in the current data."
"Canonical does not provide updates for Sun Java 6 Runtime. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."

I do believe I need that program in order to see the "Download" button

Okay, have you enabled the repos via Software Sources?

yes, but doing an update using the liveCD will leave me with negative space.

I understand that. But how about just hitting the reload button after enabling repos. You don't have to install the updates, just reload
