I was just listening to I'm So Sick by Flyleaf, which I downloaded coz it's in that cool scene in Die Hard 4.0 where Bruce Willis first meets Matt, and it got me thinking... has anyone attempted to create or successfully created a desktop that looks as crazy as that in the past? I mean people like that exist... I wonder if they run Linux! :D

But yeah here's his desktop anyway, there are pictures on the net where people have attempted to recreate it with Linux with varying success, I mean it CAN be done definitely! :)

Just wondering if anyone has attempted it or just anything else they would describe as a "hacker" or super techie desktop! I have, but it never looked as good as his or as good as I can imagine one looking!

Anyway, it might be a cool little challenge, post some screenies if you have them!

LOL look like your average Linux desktop.

BTW, XFCE's window manager can make a WM like shown in you pic. In addition without headache coding!

I think I literally had that exact desktop a year or two ago. I think there might be a Emerald theme that emulates it. :)

What is it about that desktop that makes it "hacker"-ish?

Meh, it looks neat, but it is a usability nightmare.

Transparent terminal windows are neat...until you can't read what is there-due to the neat background image getting in the way.

Lots of icons are neat...until you try to find anything.

Not sure about the desktop, but if you like Hackers, try finding a copy of this movie, aptly named Hackers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackers_%28film%29). The soundtrack makes great late night computing music and can probably be found in a torrent somewhere, not supporting that sort of thing though :)

Not sure, but you can make XFCE look just like that. XFCEs window manager is super flexible compared to GNOME's.

I agree, I hate desktop icon nightmares and the transparency of the term must compliment the desktop background.

Personally I love mess, like on my desktop it's a STATE:

but I absolutely love it, it means I've got everything I could ever want a click away and presented in a way that I think looks really cool! :)

I use a transparent Tilda, but my console windows are opaque.

I started to think it was Flux, but I see a bar on top in the photo on the left.

I think it is Gnome with a dark theme and dark wallpaper.

I don't understand all of the desktop icons. Basically I feel desktop icons are a waste of space and the desktop is for working. I use the blank desktop when photo editing, downloading and other temporary file storage and when finished put it away in the proper folder.

I think that with Slicknesss Black Gnome theme and a dark wallpaper you could achieve this look.

You might also look at Fluxbox because some of those themes are truly "Hackers" inspired.

I was looking for slickness black on gnome-look.org when I saw this theme:

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Black+%26+Blue?content=117403&PHPSESSID=ea5f6b5f357ea621bfc89b11e80412cc

Here is Slickness Black theme:

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Slickness+Black?content=73210

Here is the themes page for Fluxbox:

Try a tiling window manager using console apps for a "hacker" look (and a fast and productive desktop).

In those pictures all I see is 3 open terminals that are blue, with a fancy window decoration..... in fact, it doesn't look like a hacker desktop at all. (with it's cluttered desktop icons)

This is how I think a hacker desktop would look: http://haskell.org/sitewiki/images/a/aa/Screen-triplehead-galois.jpg

lol I think you guys may be putting a little bit too much focus on the icons - I think everyone uses them differently, I mean I always end up with a ton of icons because I like to access things quickly and icons are a very immediate way to do that! :)

And yeah as we've established I like mess! lol

So here's an Emerald theme I like and use sometimes:

http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Die+Hard+4.0+-+Matthew+Farrel%27s+theme+%28E?content=66714

and with this thread I just now figured out the meaning of its name.

It looks like there's also a gtk theme. Not hating on any particular KDE preferences.

that's seriously cool! It looks just a LITTLE polished for the theme from Die Hard (Gnome is very clean and anti-aliased, and his desktop was quite rough around the edges and like, gritty and stuff) but other than that it's very nice!

haha it is however a very coordinated mess! No icon is out of place! ^_^

I think it falls a bit short. However, it meets or exceeds my expectations of looking unnecessarily fugly.

I like it. I'm not a fan of the colors though, too purple for me, and I'm not a fan of the background.

The DH4-style theme is interesting. I like flat themes much more than glossy themes, and I think it's still eye-candy-ish.

Does anyone know good flat dark semi-transparent themes other than the DH4 one ?

hehe yeah it looks OK, but I don't think it needs to be referred to as unnecessarily complicated! Sometimes you just want to do a LOT with your desktop and do it very fast! :)
