Hi all, my collage gave me a old computer to help me with my homework ect. Its a older computer 700mhz windows 2000 512mb ram. Now my teacher recemended ubuntu so i downloaded and burned it to cd and it wont boot on start up.
now im not that much of a moron to not check the bios and i made the harddrive the last in the boot priority no luck! ok so maybe my cd is missing some boot record on it so i try windows xp and a old copy of linux(fedora 1) no cigar.
so now i try wubi and get seccess installing it whoo hoo it actually works on my computer but its very messy and i dont want windows on this computer at all!
so my question is how can i get it to boot from the cd and start a clean install?

Sounds like a media problem. I would burn at the slowest speed possible, or maybe even redownload the image. Also what software did you use to burn it with?

does your teacher have a copy of ubuntu? I had problems downloading a good copy once, and ended up borrowing and copying a friends copy, which I knew had previously been installed. Always have a copy of the disk for the system you installed, so you can be sure you can boot from it again if you ever have computer problems.

"so i try windows xp and a old copy of linux(fedora 1) no cigar."
I'm just a little confused here. Does that mean you were able to boot from a Windows XP and Fedora Installation CD?
Sorry for the confusion :P

If you are able to boot from the Windows XP and Fedora CD, it wouldn't hurt to just burn another copy of the Ubuntu CD and retry. :)

Seeing your situation i would say that your cd drive may be a bit faulty. And oh yeah after seeing the specs of that old computer i doubt it will be able to boot from a usb flash drive. So your options are to take out the hd and install it by someone or by a new cd rom drive.

Just a quick thought. Is the BIOS password protected? Could be that it is letting you think you are changing settings, but it isn't actually changing anything. Just a thought since it came from the college, they probably had it screwed down pretty tight to prevent people making changes, etc.

Well if what he's saying is right then if you remove the hard drive it will be able to boot from the cd.

It works whooo hooo
there is nothing wrong with my dvd burner but when i traded it to the old cd drive that came with the system it worked (i thought about trying that i feal like a idiot now). i think the bios dosnt have a driver r something for the drive it has to boot into a os in order for it to get the right driver well atleast thats what i think
and i disabled everything in the bios to make it only boot from the cd drive didnt work
well i would like to thank every body for the help i probly wouldnt have figured this one out for a while
