Just found out about/started using this. While you can tell it makes everything much more yellow, it is a lot easier on the eyes at night. I don't know if I'll keep it though because my room is always about the same light anyways. I guess it could help with my monitor not keeping me awake.

Just thought I'd mention that Compiz does have a brightness modifier, it's just not enabled by default. I set mine to Ctrl-Alt-Button5 to dim and Button4 to brighten, and it feels similar to xFlux, but less yellow.

well xflux isn't for bright monitors, but its a plus to turn it down at night, this is to change the color on your moniter as nightfall reaches, it goes to a natural color so you can sleep better at night (red tint) i have been using it for the last few days, and my sleep has improved, heres instructions on how to install it install source/link (http://www.ubuntu-inside.me/2009/03/flux-better-lighting-for-your-computer.html)

a couple good tips on this page, but I think F.lux sounds better; so I'll try it, too. Also, thx for the instructions; they are working. You can make it warmer by appending -k [something between 2000 and 3400, 3400 being default]

I just do (make sure offending window is in focus) Super+N to reverse white windows/pages to black. Much easier on the eyes at night.

I started using redshift and I think it does the same thing.

Also, to understand why these programs do this you could read this article

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/TECH/05/13/sleep.gadgets.ipad/index.html?hpt=C1

found it on OMG!ubuntu!.

These were good tips, too. There was a phase, a couple months ago, when I was manually doing that Firefox plugin all the time. The Super N is good for all windows and Firefox/Chrome unless I want to see the pictures properly.

Or you could just turn on the lights in your house instead of living like a mole-person.

Oh yes, and just to add a bit of ignorance, what does the 'super' key mean?
I'm forever adjusting my monitor settings in the evening, then back up again in daylight.

I find it hard to believe that one of the issues here is 'my monitor keeps me awake at night'!

There is no off button or you just like to burn energy and get a bad night's sleep? You can leave the box on and the monitor off (although I can't think of much worse than trying to sleep to the hum off my desktop).

I do something novel to avoid my laptop screen disturbing my sleep when I go to bed ... I close the lid! Other times I switch the power off at the wall. Both computers run off one powerpoint so that kills all blue lights and anything else that might disturb solid slumber. ;)
