I installed Karmic from the install CD and was pleased to find high resolutions available (1440x900 and higher).

After my first Update Manager upgrades, I could not find any resolutions higher than 1440x900. ](*,)

There's an easy solution:

SOLUTION

Run the LiveCD again and choose a high resolution, then reboot. Ubuntu somehow rediscovered my high resolutions again.

Steps:

Run the LiveCD.

Choose to run Ubuntu off the CD without installing (first option).

System -> Preferences -> Display, and choose a high resolution, such as your highest. You'll be prompted to logout.

Login with username: ubuntu. The password is empty, so just hit enter.

Make sure your resolution is working.

Reboot. You should now see your high resoutions in System -> Preferences -> Display. \\:D/
