can't install ubuntu 9.1 while able to run from cd !

I have a pentium 1.4 pc with 256 M ram and 40 G hard drive xp installed

and wanted to replace it with ubuntu 9.1

I chosed install ubuntu but It cannot install and will instead run directly from cd but very slow

what is causing this ?

any suggestion for a solution?

Hi & Welcome to the forums, from memory - 256Mb of RAM is too low for Ubuntu - I'd strongly suggest looking at Xubuntu - It is full Ubuntu, just smaller ;-)

All the normal support is offered on here, just ensure you put the xubuntu tag in when you are asking questions - so we know you're using that flavour.

You'd need to do a little preperation work on your XP install, if you want to be able to run both systems, side by side - It's not too difficult to do.

The LiveCD requires 384MB RAM, minimum. You might want to try the alternate CD: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors

it worked fine so far

my first try was with virtual box on another pc and it installed directly

this time it started ubuntu with an icon on desktop to install ubuntu 9.1 clicking on it started the installation process and worked fine

although i dowloaded xubuntu and alternate but since it worked i stopped trying them

A bit surprising that it installed...

If you can find some RAM for that machine, you'll see a huge improvement going from 256 to 512. Going from 512 to 1GB would be even better.
