Does anyone know if it's possible to launch an application such that gnome will look for a desktop free of applications, place it there and go there?

It would be possible with a script and wmctrl (but not with compiz, maybe compiz can do that itself).

I'm looking to do the same thing on my desktop.

I installed UNR on my Wind U100.
Then switched the desktop environment back to Gnome.
Removed the upper and lower panels.
Installed Gnome-Do (for launching), AWN (hidden launchbar for time being), and Screenlets (for status info).
Enabled Maximus and Compiz.

Now when I launch any app it goes to full screen automatically, and doesn't collide with panel geometry, so each app gets all the netbook screenspace possible. I slide them left or right into empty desktops, but I'd love to just be able to have any app start on an empty desktop and go from there.

So close to the perfect desktop config :)
