Upgrade without losing download packages

I have used apton CD (http://aptoncd.sourceforge.net/) to save and transfer applications (and their dependencies) from one Jaunty set-up to another Jaunty set-up. In one instance, I have used it to recover and rebuild a Jaunty set-up.

I have NEVER tried to do Jaunty to Karmic (different versions). You may want to investigate further and post back your results if you do try.
