It's what some of us older types use to refer to someone's first name. My guess is that it's based on some assumptions that no longer hold, society having changed over the years. We risk digressing....... :)

Fire_Chief
December 18th, 2009, 05:30 PM
Nickname from a major blunder at my old job. I used to work with a small IT company and we were moving in to an old Sunguard facility for our new offices. We had to remove 2+ dump truck loads of old CAT3 network cable and such that was zip-tied up in the ceilings (drop ceiling style). The space was about 40,000 sq ft and the process of moving a ladder every 3 feet to remove another tile and snip a few ties quickly got old. At one tile, I found a large pipe (8") that fed the building fire sprinkler system. It was certainly big enough to hold my weight and made it 10x faster for running down a stretch of cabling snipping the zip-ties and yanking out yards of cable. This went on for about 2 weeks without a single hitch. One night we were clearing another part of the building. I had become progressively more and more confident in the strength of the sprinkler lines to hold my weight (with my help). This fateful night I ventured across a 1" line feeling it bow while I held myself up by the roof trusses. I stepped on a T-junction, heard a nice *crack*, followed by a constant hissing.... It took all of a second to realize what I'd done. 20 minutes later after someone finally heard my calls for help to shutdown the water mains for the building, I got out of the ceiling. Called a 24 hour commercial plumber to come fix it (blah blah fire code blah blah). My co-workers got some beer and retold their blunders of days past. From that night on I was dubbed Fire Chief. If you read this far...I would love to give you those few minutes back but alas I'm fresh out. :)

Marvin is my nickname. It's what I would have called myself if I picked my name.
The number is just the integer between 665 and 667 to me. At the time I made this account, I was made fun of, because of my religion/lack thereof (to the point of switching schools, and refusing to talk to any of the other students) and the number seemed to offend christians.

Lovechild came from the airplane scene in the beginning of the movie JFK. I dunno I always just liked the way it sounded.

Mandred
January 6th, 2010, 01:05 AM
In Cornish legends, Mandred is the true name of God which, when pronounced, draws the All-Power to the one speaking it. Such legends have parallels in Jewish and Arabic mythology, two cultures who will not even attempt to pronounce the name of their God for fear of the power it will unleash.

I am a big Spider-Man fan, and there was a long time ago a story arch called "Maximum Carnage". When I first started playing Counter-Strike years ago I wanted a cool-sounding name, and so I came up with MaxCarnage based on that old comic arch. I am MaxCarnage on Steam (mostly playing Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead nowadays) and just about everywhere else now.

By the way, Maximum Carnage wasn't a very good arch. Just inspired the name.

Full name Alexander

It comes from the Greek name Αλέξανδρος (Alexandhros), which means ""defender of people"," defender of man", from Greek αλέξω (alexo) "to defend, help" and ανήρ (aner) "man" (genitive ανδρός, "andhros").

(This name was most famously borne by Alexander the Great, King of Macedon. In the 4th century BC he built a huge empire out of Greece, Egypt, Persia, and parts of India. The name was later used by emperors of Russia, kings of Scotland and Yugoslavia, and eight popes.)

peakshysteria
January 22nd, 2010, 10:38 PM
Tv did it:

In literature and film studies, melodrama has repeatedly been theorized
as creating an excess, whether defined as a split between the level of narrative and
that of mise en scène or as a form of 'hysteria', the visually articulated return of
the ideologically repressed. Despite changing theoretical stances, critics have
viewed this excess not merely as aesthetic but as ideological, opening up a textual
space which may read against the seemingly hegemonic surface..5
The key text for the theorisation of visual excess has tended to be Douglas
Sirk's Written on the Wind with its intricately layered (and thus visually
ruptured) mirror shots, phallic symbolism and 'hysterical' montage. Oil dynasty
sagas from the 1950s melodramatic tradition--Giant and Written on the Wind-
(both 1956 releases)- provided prototypes for Dallas and Dynasty. The
iconography of the oil baron’s mansion with its massive central staircase comes
directly from these films.

Later in the decade the infamous “cat fights” between Alexis and Krystle,
complete with mud-slinging, pond-tossing and clothes ripping ‘intensify’ the
convention of feminine rivalry so prevalent in the soap opera tradition by
turning it into a camp display. Through “hysteria” in the mise-en-scene,
“excess” is represented for TV

For coding moments of 'peak' hysteria, Dallas and
Dynasty will employ repeated zooms-in to close-ups of all actors in a scene.
Reserved for moments of climactic intensity, this technique was used to create
the end of season cliffhanger for the 1981-82 season of Dynasty. In this case the
climax was both narrative and sexual, with the zooms used on the injured Blake
Carrington intercut with scenes of Alexis Carrington making love to Blake's
enemy Cecil Colby.
