this guy is horrible at math

About 30 million people use Linux world wide.

No one knows how many they really are.

I guess 10% of PCs have Ubuntu installed and Facebook has 350 million users. This means about 35 million Facebook users uses Ubuntu.

Let's Check it out.

Plus the Ubuntu page only has 130,116 fans
and the Ubuntu Group has 51,551 members
that only 181667 if no one is registered in both

Ubuntu group? I don't want to join that. Although Ubuntu is my favorite distro, GNU/Linux > Ubuntu.

I might join this Linux group at some point.

If anyone here is at all concerned about online privacy, they should be aware that using the same username or email address or other factors in more than one online membership, they are making it that bit easier for the Man to figure out everything you've done online.

Maybe you don't care about online privacy? Maybe you agree with Eric Schmidt that if you want to keep something private, you probably shouldn't do it (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1353052)? Well, that's one point of view. There are others.

I think Schmidt (and his many supporters) is confusing privacy with secrecy. There are all sorts of things we do that is private not secret. For instance, when you go to the toilet you close the door. Why? Is it a secret you have bodily functions? Of course not: it is private. Like puttung a letter in an envelope. Or encrypting an email with GPG.

Remember this, enemy of privacy: your parents very likely did something very private once. Otherwise you wouldn't be here sneering at my words now.

Really we are a week away from 2010 and you're telling me their no way to know for sure how many Linux users their is! Either we are such a small marginal number that nobody in the IT world care or their so many of us out there that nobody in IT want to acknowledge it by fear of helping the spread of that "socialist disease!"

That is why i haven't joined facebook in the first place! Privacy and security are my top priorities on the internet. I don't agree with Eric or any facebook CEO. They are equally bonkers to me.

most linux users did not register. on the other hand, registered users may change their minds and nobody being the wiser. in my view all statistics about numbers of users and percentages of the market are mere guestimates. but then who cares?
