View Full Version : [ubuntu] old notebook with 96m of ram

Have an old Compaq presario 1235 with a 233mc cpu & only 96m of ram. Currently have windows 2000 installed but its very very slow. Wonder if i can get ubuntu installed & running. Anyone got any ideas? TIA

Xubuntu is smaller OS than Ubuntu, but on that spec I don't think you can run that. Take a look at Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux.

I would not recommend anything in the Ubuntu family for that computer. Both your ram and your CPU are too old:


Recommended minimum requirements

Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

* 700 MHz x86 processor
* 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
* 8 GB of disk space
* Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
* Sound card
* A network or Internet connection

Puppy and Damn Small are popular options for very old computers, good luck!
