Hi Everyone,

I installed Ubuntu 9.10. After many tries. But when i am facing some problems booting. I am getting and error which says:
Error: out of disk
Press Any key to continue....

Could you please let me know what went wrong in the installation?
I am using a 500GB HDD which already has Windows XP installed in the first partition. I deleted a partition of 100GB from the end and installed Linux there.

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script to the desktop. Once on desktop open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and run this command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

You have an install of 9.10 on both sda & sdb. The install on sda has /etc/fstab on it's own partition. The install on sdb looks better. GRUB is installed on both MBRs (sda & sdb) The GRUB on sda points to a non-existant UUID.

I would go into BIOS and set the 500 GB disk (sdb) as first hard disk to boot in the hard disk boot order. The GRUB on sdb's MBR does point to the correct partition (sdb1). Save changes to CMOS and continue booting. Boot into Ubuntu and open a terminal and run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pcHit enter at all windows until you get to the window where you can choose sda and/or sdb. Use the arrow keys to navigate to sda, then hit the spacebar to deselect it if it is already selected. If sda is unselected use the arrow key to navigate to sdb. Hit the spacebar to select sdb. Hit tab to get to OK at the bottom and hit Enter. This will set it up so any grub-pc (GRUB 2) updates go to sdb.

My BIOS setting is set to boot from the 500GB HDD. Even after that i get the error. Anyways, I will do as you said and let you know.

Also would like to know that how come the GRUB got into sda on which i never isntalled Ubuntu? :(

hell_storm2004

Well here's what i did:
1. I could not boot into Ubuntu because that's something which I am not able to do. When I select Ubuntu from the OS selection list I get the error:

Error: out of disk
Press Any key to continue....
And when I press any key, I get the list of OS options again.
So i booted from my CD and selected, "try ubuntu without any changes" and opened Terminal and did what you said (I selected 'sdb'), I got this error:

grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub.

No path or device is specified.
Try ``grub-probe --help'' for more information.
Auto-detection of a filesystem module failed.
Please specify the module with the option `--modules' explicitly.

Is what i did correct? Or there am I missing something here?

I am lost now. You said you never installed ubuntu on sda but there are numerous references to an Ubuntu install being on sda. See this:

I think there is a lot about this situation that you are omitting from telling us. To me it looks like you installed ubuntu multiple times, deleted some partitions or maybe even added a hard disk.

I have tried installinh Ubuntu many time, but all the time i have used the 500GB HDD, because i wanted windows to stay on the 1TB HDD. Even i think so i maybe not be posting something which may tell you something.

Should i try removing the 1TB HDD and reinstalling Ubuntu? After the installation is done, i would attach the 1TB HDD again. Would that work?
