Geek.
Like wire and cable, the two terms are more or less used interchangeably, but are very different things.

I'd bet a lot of people don't know that the nerd on the left wound up dampening a lot of viewer panties among female ER fans:

I disagree fundamentally with the chart. IMO a nerd is someone with intelligence/aptitude in some academic capacity, a dork is one who has problems fitting in with society and/or awkward and a geek is someone who has some sort of obsession, it could be star trek or it could be WOW/MMO's. nerds are not necessarily socially inept and geeks are not necessarily intelligent. by that standard i'm a geek with nerdish tendencies
my two cents

I prefer geek.

Geeks make good money, are socially acceptable and in doubt, you slur the word some and maybe people think you are saying "Greek".

I didn't know that was him in Revenge of the Nerds. He was also Goose on Top Gun.

I'm a geek.Great chart. That's a good representation of how I've always thought of it. I never put Dweeb in there, though. That's great.

According to that chart, I used to be a nerd. I am now a geek, and hopefully will always be a geek.

To help find your category, look at this picture:

If you said to yourself, "Wow, a hot girl dressed as a Vulcan!", you are a geek.

If you said to yourself, "Wow, a Vulcan girl, and she's hot!", you are a nerd.

If you looked at the uniform first to check it for accuracy, you are a dweeb.

If you looked at ONLY the uniform, and are now mentally composing a scathing reply about its design flaws, you are a dork.

What if none of the above? The girl is neither "hot" nor "Vulcan" (although she seems to be pretending to be one), and I care not for the accuracy of the uniform.

Hmm?

I've been called all kinds of names, and given all kinds of labels. The only one that really matters to me though is "Dad". Thats my favorite.

Nit-picking critical replies that miss the point of the photo fall into the final category. :)

The latter one is a promotional still from Revenge of the Nerds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088000/).

Not socially "inept" just like to be left alone. And I am.

Also for humor: " tri, bi, oct, or dec; 1 is still alone"

I've always preferred Geek over Nerd.

I did some polling with my non geek friends and they all seem to prefer the term nerd over geek, I guess I'll have to show them venn diagram...then explain what a venn diagram is...

In that case, I'm a nerd normally, but I can pass off as a geek when needs must.
