I am running Ubuntu 9.04 with NO problems at all. I tried to upgrade to 9.10 and it is slow and has screen artifacts and it locks up very often. I have tried both upgrade path and new install both with same results. I tend to think it is a incompatibility problem with my ATI x300 video card. But if that is the cause why does it work great in 9.04? I am at a loss on what to do and how to proceed.

With Ubuntu 9.10 a part of the closed source drivers is no longer accepted and no longer recognized. I'm also having problems with my ATI card. I don't have the symptomes you mention but I have to disable powercontrol (acpi) to be able to boot with the result that I can't hybernate anymore or view my battery status. It's only since 9.10 and I think the best solution would be to go back to 9.04 and try again with the next release.

I am back on 9.04 and guess I am stuck there. I can't understand why they did this. Screwed up everything.

It is not Ubuntu, but rather AMD/ATI as they have stopped all support for all but the newest vid cards. Complain to them about this.

I agree that ATI stopped supporting my card, but it worked in 9.04 so why did Ubuntu drop it? So it is in their ball park not ATI.

I read the article, but is there a link to this unreleased driver?
