Yes, the power level of a distro is directly proportional to its number of users.

Probably over 9000.

ah but don't forget some users probably hide their user agent so it could be as high as 9500.

I would also agree, it's totally over 9000. The number of users is the same as ubuntu's power level. However, ubuntu's scouter is now gone.

ive come up with great idea.

ok, based on the fact that every other post is about arch, it stands to reason that the number of arch mentions is equal to the number of ubuntu users (obviously ;))
so using the power of google-fu we have 47,600 users :)

that is very nice approximation.
if 47,600 = arch_number

then arch_number - 40,000 < ubuntu_users < arch_number + 20,000,000

something like that.

I wouldn't think there is any way of knowing for sure.

Surely the most accurate record is the number ofdownloads and discs sent out, but that won't take into account those that get the discs and then don't bother installing... or those that use the disc and then pass it on.

Unless there is some way to count the numver of machines getting updates from the repos, but that wouldn't get those that don't update their systems, and might get the same people several times if they are running more than one machine.

To summarise that little rant, I don't think we'll ever know.
