Hey guys and girls,

So what in your opinion would be considered as essential programs that should be installed when doing a clean install of Ubuntu? Primary roll of this computer will be to monitor network traffic, monitor video feeds, and other security needs. Secondary roll is person stuff like gaming, music, surf web and all that happy shi#.

I'm pretty new to Linux so I would just like to get an idea of what would be good to install out of the box before installing some other 3rd party software.

Thanks a bunch Bush

Hallo. Welcome to the real world...;)

I'd suggest just installing the thing for a start without worrying too much. Have a look at it and see what is there.

I don't think there is any option in the standard Ubuntu ( I have ubuntu studio )to add or omit any components at the install.

As I said, install it and have a look what is there. There will be an application either already installed or available through the package manager for most things you want to do.

Have fun

Bush,

You could try a server install and go from there, adding a browser, etc.

https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/index.html

You could also do a minimal install.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

have fun. Happy holidays and happy ubuntu-ing.

Ah ha... Some good advice here already... Thanks guys...:D

Sorry I didn't mention that I already installed the OS, in fact I'm using it right now. The server install sounds more like my cup of tea though. I probably should of read up on that before just diving right in with this OS. Not that it's a bad OS I actually really like it one could say "I think I'm falling in love with this operating system". LOL

Geez man Ubuntu has managed to pretty much yank me away from Windows XP, Win 7 and all flavors within each. OMG! Never ever thought I would be saying anything like that.

well I think I'll go read up some more about the Ubuntu 9.10 Server (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-server/)

Bush,

Consider also the 8.04 LTS server edition. The next LTS version is set to be out April 2010 (4 months away) ... LUCID.

As you know by now, there are still some things/actions (like playing games) that perform better in windows. Consider a dual-boot with win7 for your gaming. Note, I am a linux/ubuntu fan.
