no sound on jaunty, no wireless on karmic

Can't win with macbook A1278. Tried installing jaunty on a macbook.. no sound whatsoever, no matter what I tried, upgraded to karmic, got sound, lost my wireless.. wtf

Does the Linux have to run native, or could it be a virtual guest of Parallels or VMware Fusion or virtualbox?

Do other distributions (Fedora 12, OpenSuSE, Debian, ...) do any better?

If it has to be native Ubuntu, start filing launchpad bugs for your non-working hardware, and try to nudge Lucid Lynx into working.
