Thankfully GRUB lets me boot into 2.6.31-14, which works fine, but if I try the newer one, the screen immediately goes black and nothing else happens. Also, soft rebooting does not work. I kno a few other people have described this same problem today, but I don't see any answers. So I downloaded and ran the Boot Info Script, and here are the results. Thank you so much for your help! I am not a techie. (By the way, there is no OS installed in SDB [my NTFS drive]. It's just a storage drive. Don't know if that means anything.)

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> Grub 1.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive
in partition #1 for /boot/grub.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

Oops, actually, what I meant was that right after I choose the new kernel in GRUB, I get some text up there which flashes by too quickly to read, and THEN the screen goes black.

Strike that. I got it all to work. My problem was not the Kernal. It was my acer timeline issue.

I had to add the "libata.force=noncq" to kernel command line for normal booting.

All is well. Hope his helps.

Use these files to install 2.6.32 kernel, I solved most of my problems with it.

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/

choose whether 32 or 64 bits, and install image, all and headers on that order, after installing the 3 files should be ok, it's lucid's kernel, or so I've heard.
