I'm going to be up front here. I'm not actually using ubuntu, but opensolaris. I can't get much help on their forums so I decided to come here. I originally started with a minimal virtualbox appliance that just booted to console and had no graphical packages installed. I've since installed X and gnome and am able to boot up to GDM, but when I login I just get a background and a cursor, no panel, no nautilus, no metacity, no terminal. Gnome is definitely launching because it's generating the users configuration folders and I have since installed power manager and am getting a popup saying it is not been installed correctly.

I'm just not sure what logs I should be looking in to find any useful errors. All I can see is in .xsession_errors it has:

/usr/X11/bin/dispswitch exiting: too few (less than 2) or too many (more than 2)
crtcs: 1
