I have been accused of "superfluous details." In my view, people do not take the time to understand what is pertinent.
I have pictures of my activities, I will provide only one link:
http://www.monkeyview.net/id/965/fsck/index.vhtml
Since everybody hates pictures, however, in those pictures there could be some important information. My username on the free photo server is "kayvey" located in the "965" subdirectory. Directories are called "Albums" I have a subAlbum "ComPuter Pwobwems" that is located in the subdirectory "fsck" (note this relevance to the URL path) that has 2254 pictures. Relevant pictures for this are in 1) "Efforts to Run Gentoo Linux" (166 pictures) 2) "No X disaster Nov. 25, 2009" (97 pictures) 3) "Gentoo dmesg" (167 pictures--actually may not be relevant) and 4) "Trying to bring Ubuntu back up November 2009" (14 pictures).
Okay. Enough of what people don't want to hear. Here is a description of my activities that lead to my "No X" disaster. I had Ubuntu. I had put it on a 500GB disk that I bought separately. I took a screwdriver (like you can buy at Ace Hardware, hold in your hand, it's made of steel and plastic.) and pulled out the 2.5" Microsoft Vista containing HD from what I call the "master slot." The new HD is "bare bones" at least that is the term that the guy at Office Depot called it. I burnt a CD, followed instructions, and created an Ubuntu on my new disk. Periodically, for various reasons, I get out the screwdriver and swap the HDs instead of dual booting like most folks do. I have been a subscriber to FreeBSD mailing lists for quite some time now, and I noted at one point that there are at least others out there who may do something similar.
OK. No problems yet. Just trying to give relevant background. I'm sorry. I think I need to be clear.
THen. I get a NEW 2.5" HD for laptops. (My computer is a Gateway MD7818u). I decide that I am unhappy with the way my marker is smudging, so I create a word processor document with a slew of various sized Microsoft, Ubuntu, and Gentoo logos, and go to Kinkos and make a color print. I affix these logos to my three HDs appropriately, so I don't get mixed up when I swap.
OK. Everyone is bored. Sorry.
I also have this thing called a FireWire/USB2.0 PHR-S250CC external 2.5" hard drive enclosure. When I plug it into ubuntu, I see new /dev entries sdb, sdb1, sdb2, etc.
I burn a Gentoo CD. I go through some irritations seeing the network, and a guy on the Gentoo forums tells me that I can install from "an existing Linux installation," but it doesn't really talk about anything like my FireWire/USB2.0. I follow the instructions of chroot from Gentoo while it is mounted from the /dev/sdb3 (etc) location. I get a base system. I found I could swap the HDs and get a character based terminal that fills up the whole screen.
Now I want to build Gnome for Gentoo.
So I do it. I didn't realize there was a web page for that configuration, because I think they default to KDE maybe? There was a small blurb on the installation pages.. I try to figure out my USE flags..
well.. you guys don't care about Gentoo.
Anyway.. I am swapping back and forth, getting advice from the Gentoo folks, and end up successfully building a Gentoo Gnome, that I am now running. I plugged my Ubuntu disk into the FireWire/USB2.0. I just copied a bunch of stuff over.
Anyway.. I know I haven't given anybody much to work with here, but I feel it is important that everybody is clear about what happened. If anybody wants to engage me, I will be happy. If you are going to take one look at this "dissertation" as my mom has put it, and go "Huh?" I don't especially want to hear it.
OK. I am going to close with something I perhaps should have opened with, but I tried posting on Debian and they started talking about my MBR, but how is that relevant if I am not dual booting? Anyway. I am going to make myself a liar now, and post one more picture link:
http://www.monkeyview.net/id/965/fsck/ubuntu_fix/PB27001402.vhtml
my poor Ubuntu charater-based console is telling me that my "apt-get install gnome" has unmet dependencies in gnome-desktop-environment (=1:2.22.2~4ubuntu8) but ..
gnome-vfs-obexftp but it is not installable
I don't want to hear "blow everything away and start over," because it will be so much more fun chatting about this with anybody who gives me the time of day.
