Ok, here is something interesting...

Today I was about to attempt an upgrade install of 8.10 from the Update Manager. As it started to perform system checks, it asked me to insert a 9.04 disk! Is this normal? Can't I do an upgrade through the Manager?

not too sure on that one, I used the command line to do my last upgrade.

For your 8.10 --> 9.04, it's over here --> http://www.ubuntugeek.com/upgrade-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex-to-ubuntu-904-jaunty-jackalope-beta.html

I must clarify that I was attempting to upgrade from 8.04LTS to 8.10 when it asked for a 9.04 disk.

I have to upgrade through 8.10 in order to upgrade to 9.04 -> 9.10.

I want to get to 9.10 but I'm a reluctant because of past problems with 9.04 when it first came out.
