My wife asked me what I wanted for a stocking stuffer.

It's a steal at $55,000 from Dell...

Snap!

The Dell version is customized and will only run Windows.

If you buy one directly from Cray, however, you can slap a Tux sticker on that baby.

Perhaps you can ask for a windows 7 refund, that would reduce the price a bit into something you can afford :P

why why 54,999.00? why not just 55,000, if you have enough money to be spending it on this then the extra time spent on writing out the cheque will negate any saving you made.

anyway why do they have to spoil it by putting windows on it, who uses windows hpc ?

Windows 7 installed by default? Don't they know supercomputers aren't supposed to run windows? Oh, wait, it's a workstation ;)

Same reason you'll see 49.99 on the price for a new printer. The human brain has a tendency to default towards rounding down, so just taking a dollar or a cent off the price makes it look a fair bit cheaper.

You are right. That's why I never buy anything with that kind of a price tag, they are trying to trick me :lolflag:

Linux will most certainly run on one of those! After all, Linux can power this bad boy: http://www.cray.com/Products/XT/Systems/XT5.aspx
Basically it's a blade machine with unusually high-powered CPUs, Linux does most of its "useful work" on hardware like that.

You're actually saving a couple hundred that way, if I understand it correctly. Sort of like those $599.99 furniture prices, they actually are saving you closer to $20 or $50.

how??? unless there are different tax bands, which certainly isn't the case over here in the uk

ive never thought it was cheaper (except by one cent/pence/galactic centi-credit), i always thought it was introduced to stop cashiers nicking money, if something costs £20 and you hand over a note, theres no reason for the cashier to open the till, and can just pocket the money, if on the other hand it costs 19.99 they have to put it through the system to open the till, to get the change, in this case tho its silly because its online.
plus even if there was a psychological reason, surely 60k sounds cheaper than 59,999.00. the same as the banks were bailed out for 100bn, which is pretty meaningless to most people, or at least would find it hard to relate to, 99,999,999,999.99 on the other hand would surely clarify just how big the number actually is.

ps whats going on with the forums at the mo, not letting me directly reply to anyone ???
