Before I tried Ubuntu Server, I met the same problem described in the subject. I thought I had to use the Alternate Install CD instead, so I got one. But the problem stayed the same. What am I supposed to do in order to have the command line installation?

Thanks in advance

You could try the Ubuntu minimal install CD:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal
Download it here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD
Hmmm, the alternate install CD used to include an option to install a command line system if I remember correctly. I just boot up my 9.10 alternate install CD. There is no option for a command line system anymore.

And welcome to the Ubuntu forums!

I've already downloaded the image, really, though I didn't use it yet. I really hope this time the CD won't be wasted, I have to install Ubuntu for a old P133 and the command line installation seems to be the only chance...

Do you mean the "help" text still mentions it, but that option is not anymore recognized at the prompt? This is what I saw...

Thanks!

I meant that the option to install a command line system is not present in the menu when you boot the alternate CD. I think it used to be there in older versions of Ubuntu.
For your system a command line system would be the way to go. You may be able to use a window manager like Fluxbox, OpenBox, or IceWM. That minimal install CD should be able to give you a command line system.
