I just read this story:

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/12/artists-lawsuit-major-record-labels-are-the-real-pirates.ars

I was more than a little offended by the record industry's "reckless, high-handed and arrogant conduct" to quote the article.

The record industry systematically publish music without permission, which now has resulted in a lawsuit for damages of more than 50 mill. dollars, by the artists.

The same record industry that has pushed for more and more harsh punishment of individuals infringing copyrights even on a very small scale, so much that now ordinary families risk being ruined for life, if a kid unknowingly unknowingly download a copyrighted piece of music.

But this may come back and bite them, as the 50 plus million dollars, may end up costing them 6 billion dollars.

I hope the record industry loose big time.

i hope those "murdering rapists" (pirates (http://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8344680), right? the industries word, not mine.) are fined to the maximum extent they had previously demanded from single mothers.

Won't that further motivate the industry to pursue their own crusade? I mean, sure serves 'em right. But that doesn't mean they'll be stopping on their tracks.

I don't see how that should be the case, but it might motivate them to further their safeguards, resulting in even worse contracts for musicians.

it could also mean that the exact same arguments they make for ridiculous fines later on... can be countered by quoting their own arguments against it during this trial.

There was a typo some early on in the chain of articles on this subject. It's $6 billion, not $60 bil.

Thanks, the article still says 60, but 300.000 x 20.000 is "only" 6 billion.
So there's definitely an error in the article.

I don't really think record companies serve any purpose in the digital age. They no longer have a near-monopoly on distribution as it was with CDs.

Anyway put these pirates in jail and throw away the key! :P
